Mechanical Repairs for Gasoline Cars vs. Electric Cars

As electric vehicles (EVs) become more affordable, you can count on more and more drivers switching from gas to electric the next time they need a new car. EVs have a ton of benefits over standard combustion engines, but that doesn’t mean that they’re perfect!

EVs can break down just as easily as a car with a gas engine—they just don’t require all the same types of repairs. This post from your favorite Porsche repair shop in Conway, AR will cover the different types of repairs necessary for gas and electric vehicles.

Repairs unique to gas cars

Thankfully, most vehicles are well made these days and don’t seem to have as many problems as older vehicles used to. The following issues are exclusive to drivers who have standard gasoline vehicles:

  • Fluid changes: Standard combustion engines are the only ones that require motor oil, transmission fluid, coolant and all the other types of fluids that need to be changed every few months. EV drivers can forget about ever going back to the auto shop for an oil change or to figure out what type of fluid is dripping from their car.
  • Belts: EVs don’t have belts that operate the engine, so there’s no need for them to go in to have a belt replaced or inspected. Luckily, today’s engine belts are durable and long-lasting, so there’s never too much you need to worry about belt-wise.
  • Transmission: Electric vehicles also don’t have gears. All of the power generated in the engine is distributed right to the wheel, so there’s no need for a transmission. Transmission issues are unique to combustion engines, and can easily be avoided with routine checkups.

What repairs do EVs require?

All that being said, electric car drivers don’t get off scot-free when it comes to repairs and tune-ups. They still need to worry about the aspects below:

  • Tires: All cars have tires, regardless of what type of engine is under the hood. If you’re trying to save money on fuel (which is why a lot of drivers are switching to EVs), be sure to keep your tires properly inflated at all times. Under-inflated tires waste money and are quite dangerous to drive on. It’s also a good idea to have your tires rotated every six months or so to ensure there’s even wear.
  • Brakes: Both EVs and gas-powered vehicles also obviously have brakes and brake pads that need to be fully operational at all times. We recommend having your brakes inspected each time you come in for a tire rotation. Driving down the road isn’t the best time to find out that there’s an issue with your brakes.
  • Suspension: Your car’s suspension system ensures a smooth and even ride, even on the bumpiest of roads. Being smart behind the wheel can do wonders to preserve your suspension, but it still may have issues that need repairs or replacement. If you’re experiencing a bumpy or shaky ride, it may be time to have your suspension checked out.
